Q. How many people can I commemorate using the Contributions tool on this website? Q. How many people can I commemorate using the Contributions tool on this website? A. You may commemorate as many people as you wish. You can select the people you wish to remember as part of your Contribution Profile and then link images and text to them when you upload them to the system. Return to Top. Q. Can I edit or change my contributions after I submit them to the Memorial Museum? A. You can edit a given contribution album up until the moment you click 'submit' and click through our permission and release agreement. After you've submitted your contribution album to the Memorial Museum, you may continue to view and share that album but you may not edit it anymore because its content has been imported into the Museum's internal collections management database. If you want to discuss an album that you've submitted to the Museum, you may contact us at any time. Return to Top. Q. How large can my image files be? A. We encourage you to upload the highest-resolution images you have available. The higher the resolution, the easier it will be for us to use the images for exhibitions and other public programs. Return to Top. Q. What kind of digital files can I upload to the memorial exhibition Archive? A. You may upload images files in tif, jpg, and bmp formats. You may upload audio files in mp3 format and video files in mov or mpg formats. Return to Top. Q. May I view the permission agreement for submitting my albums to the Memorial Museum before I click "submit?" A. Yes, you may view and print a copy of the permission agreement here. Return to Top. Q. When I contribute material through this website, does that mean it's visible to the public? A. No. The only people who may view materials in your contribution albums are you, the Memorial Museum staff and people with whom you share your materials by clicking 'share' in your contributor dashboard under "My Contrubtions". Once you release your material to the Memorial Museum, you set the level of potential public access to your material by indicating your permission level in the release agreement. Return to Top. Q. What happens when I share a album with my friends or family? A. When you click on 'share,' you will be able to enter in email addresses of people to whom you would like to show the photos and text you've uploaded in a contribution album. These people will receive an email with a private url to view your contribution album. The url will expire after a set time period to protect your privacy. You may share your albums with friends as many times as you would like. Return to Top. Q. Can I contribute material to the Memorial Museum if I'm not comfortable using a computer? A. Absolutely. The Memorial Museum curatorial staff members are always happy to talk with you directly and to accept contributions through the mail or in person. Return to Top. Q. What kinds of mementoes can I contribute? A. Examples of such material include: personal memorabilia, recovered property, video and audio recordings, voice messages, documents or original writings including letters, e-mails and diaries, missing or memorial posters, memorial cards or programs and commemorative T-shirts, bracelets, ornaments, medals, websites and scrapbooks. Return to Top. Q. Will the same things always be on display at the Museum? A. No. The museum will rotate the artifacts on display in its exhibitions. Return to Top. Q. Return to Top. Q. If I want to send you a printed photograph, how large should it be? A. If you wish to send printed photographs, a portrait image should ideally be 8" x 10" but additional images may vary in size. Please click here for more information. Return to Top. Q. Should images I submit be of my loved one alone or can they be with family, friends or co-workers? A. The Memorial Museum is seeking at least one photograph or portrait image for each person killed on 9/11/01 and 2/26/93 for the memorial exhibition and its accompanying archive. If possible, we would like to obtain at least one image of your loved one alone, but we are also eager to receive images of your loved one with family, friends, co-workers and others. Return to Top. Q. What happens if I send in materials but don't designate who can see or share them? A. When you submit digital materials, you will click through an agreement that will allow you to designate a level of sharing for the materials you submit. If you send in physical materials, we will follow-up with you with an official Deed of Gift form that will help you designate how your material will made accessible in the Museum. Return to Top. Q. What if I change my mind and I want a memento back? A. You are welcome to send material to the museum for us to photograph or scan and return to you, but once you donate something to the museum's permanent collection, it belongs to the Museum and we cannot legally return it without a lengthy deaccession procedure. Return to Top. Q. Will family members have to pay to get into the Museum? A. No, family members will never have to pay to get into the Museum. Return to Top. Q. If I leave an oral remembrance through Call to Remember, can I listen to it before I submit it to the Museum? A. Yes, you will be able to listen to your recording before you confirm it and submit it the Museum. In the future, if you wish to listen to your recording again, you are welcome to contact us to make an arrangement to listen to it. Return to Top. Q. When I'm done recording a Call to Remember, will there be further instructions or will I be expected just to hang up? A. How will the museum curators choose which photos, mementoes and text to feature in the memorial exhibition? A. As long as it is relevant and appropriate, all submitted material will be made accessible in the archive for the memorial exhibition. For exhibition features, the curatorial staff will endeavor to select material for display that will resonate most widely with the experiences of the Museum's audience. Return to Top. Q. What are the 9/11 Memorial Museum's recommended procedures for scanning and digitizing content for inclusion in memorial exhibition Archive? A. Start with a clean, dust-free flat-bed scanner. Follow these recommendations for scan resolution depending upon the medium to be scanned. These scan resolutions will ensure that the Memorial Museum will be able to render the image at a minimum of 600 dpi. For 35mm film/slide, scan at 2400 dpi. For 120mm film, scan at 2400 dpi. For 4"x5" film/transparency/print, scan between 1200 and 2400 dpi. For 8"x10" print, scan between 600 and 1200 dpi. For 11"x14" print, scan between 300 and 600 dpi. Save images as jpgs with the minimum data loss setting, generally a setting of "12." Return to Top. Q. Where can I find the special Call to Remember ID number for my loved one? Is it the same as the ID number I have for the Family Room? A. You can find your loved oneís special ID number on our website by clicking here, using the telephone directory in Call to Remember or contacting us if you have any trouble. The Call to Remember ID number is different from the one family members first received from the New York City Community Affairs Unit for accessing the Liberty Plaza family room.
